Individual & Small Business
Accounting

We are here to help you with your individual and small business tax and accounting needs.

What We Do

Most of our clients come to us with concerns regarding their taxes. Many come for the peace of mind of having a professional take some of the worry and stress away from preparing their taxes. Others appreciate “getting back” the weekend or two they spend each year trying to properly prepare their taxes. We help provide tax services for small businesses, their owners, and individuals (and families) with a wide range of tax needs.

Individual Taxes

Whether it is a rental property, a small side business, multiple jobs, K-1’s, complicated investment accounts, stock options, or some of the available tax credits like college credits, child tax credits, or adoption credits, our clients appreciate having someone to talk with about their financial situation and what they can do to minimize their taxes.

  • Rentals

If you are one of the many people that are developing income streams through rental properties, have inherited a property, or have a vacation home that you rent, we can help you through the process of figuring out what you can deduct and what needs to be filed.

  • Sole Props

Have a small business that gets reported on your personal tax return? We can help with that! Need to figure out what you can deduct for your car or home office? What about buying that computer or other needed equipment?

  • Investments

Whether you have a small stock account that you do a little trading in or if you have gotten into more sophisticated/advanced investments involving portfolios and partnership K-1’s, we can help you through filing taxes when they get a little complicated.

Business Taxes

Whether your business is a Sole-Proprietorship, LLC, Partnership, C-Corp, or S-Corp we can help put your bookkeeping in order and prepare the tax returns for your business.

  • Entity Selection

What is best form of business your situation? Being a Sole Proprietor? Maybe a single member LLC? Or a partnership? Maybe a S-Corp or C-Corp. We can help file all of those returns and help you figure out what might be best for your situation.

  • Payroll

Payroll just keeps getting more complicated and the penalties just keep getting larger. We can help with a customized solution for your payroll needs. We keep our payroll processing in our office, so we can customize the process for your particular situation.

  • Starting a Business

There are only about 100 different things to be done. We can help get the accounting and tax side of things set up and discuss what you need to be doing to minimize your tax exposure.

Frequently asked questions

What to expect at our first meeting/conversation

Our first contact with new clients can usually last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. We spend time trying to understand your situation and needs as well as communicating with you what we would be able to do for you. There is not a charge for this time since we are both getting an understanding and feel for how we can work together. There will be a charge if we prepare some form or process some item for you.

How much will this cost

We charge by the hour. The final cost really depends on what is being prepared and how well it is organized. An “average” individual tax return for 2021 was probably in the range of $500’s to $600’s. But we had some that were $200 and some that were closer to $14,000. As of July 2023 our hourly rates range from $95 to $220 depending on who is providing what service. Most tax work is at $220 an hour. Most Payroll work is at $110 an hour. Typically we raise rates every 2 years to coincide with inflation, although we may make other adjustments to our rate structure as needed.

How can I lower my overall cost?

We will gladly give you tips and advice on how to keep our time to a minimum. Getting us most or all of your tax information in one or two batches can really help. If we ask for 5 pieces of information and you send us one, then we ask for the information again and again – that can really increase our time and costs. Also, for businesses, if your record keeping balances, things will go more quickly.

How long will this take?

This is a surprisingly tough question. We prepare taxes and payroll every month of the year. It is not uncommon that in any given week in February and March we literally can receive a month’s worth of work in a single week. The timing seems to change each year based on when people get information into us, but someone dropping off taxes in Mid-March will likely go on extension and have to wait until July or August for us to finish up the returns.

What is an extension?

An extension of the time to file a tax return is (usually) easily granted by the IRS for a 6 month period. It is not an extension of the time to pay your taxes. If you get us enough information far enough in front of the original due date (usually 4/15 for individual returns) we will look over the information you have provided and estimate how much we think you will owe or get as a refund, and have you make any necessary payments by the original due date. We usually file extensions for half to 2/3rds of the returns we prepare every year.

When will you be working on my return?

We do our best to prepare returns based on the order in which they come in to the office. However that does get adjusted for some items. Some of the common issues involve legal proceedings and home purchases.

What about estimated payments?

We will help with estimated tax payments. Depending on your needs we can take some quick guesses about what you may owe for tax estimates, they can sometimes be based on your prior year taxes, and if needed we can prepare customized estimates for each quarter. Just be aware the estimates calculated each quarter can get quite involved depending on your situation (and thus cost a bit)

Who will be working on my return?

We do our best to have the same preparer work on your return year after year so that your preparer is more familiar with your situation. All tax preparation is done by our employees. We do not use third party or overseas preparers.
